Ty Cobb, center fielder of the Detroit Tigers of the American
League, was born December 18th, 1886, at Royston, Ga. Cobb's
professional career began in 1904, when he playedfor a short time
with the Augusta Club of the South Atlantic League. He was purchased
by Detroit in 1905. Since then he has been a regular member of the
team, and is noted as amarvel for his speed and batting.
The first Hall of Fame vote was taken in 1936 and Tyrus Cobb was
the top vote-getter, named on 222 of the 226 ballots cast. "The
Georgia Peach" out-polled every other player which wasn't a
surprise, but was is that four voters ignored him. Cobb was disliked
through out the league for his aggressive style of play and shunned
by other players, and this might have accounted for the four
votes.
Cobb won ten batting titles and finished his career with 4,191
hits and 892 stolen bases and a .366 lifetime batting average which
is still tops in the major leagues.
